Meet the Artist

Hello there, I'm Artaois!

Going by the name of ARTAOIS, this nocturnal couch gremlin is a wandering LGBTQ+ digital artist and illustrator, weaving together character designs to populate fantastical worlds. Consumed by wanderlust, he enjoys tales of grand proportions filled with heroism, far-off worlds, and battles between good and evil.Working from his iPad from various coffee houses, park benches, and aquariums, he draws monsters and characters to terrify and befriend. When he’s not searching for his next epic adventure, he enjoys exploring the open wilds of the UK with his four-legged travel companion, creating tantalizing delicious treats to delight the soul, and playing the role of the dashing hero in whatever video game currently takes his fancy!

What I Use

F.A.Q

★ I use an Apple iPad Pro 12.9 inch 3rd Generation, with a 2nd Generation Apple Pencil. I draw on Procreate. It's a really nifty device to have because I can carry it between my desk and take it with me when I go for walks! I also use a Wacom Intuos for when working at my desk. It depends on my day-to-day mood and where I want to work!

★ I started taking it seriously when I was about 17 years old. When I was little, I would use art as a way to communicate and during school, as a way to navigate stressful situations. I really like drawing dinosaurs!

★ Yes! I attended university in West Yorkshire and studied Illustration. I received my degree and graduated with a Bachelors in Art in 2022.

★ No, not unless you're the client that commissioned the work. If you'd like to support me, the best way you can do that is by reblogging and/or retweeting. It gets new eyes on my work and that helps me a lot!

★ Of course! Just make sure to give credit, whether that's by tagging me in your bio or providing a link. That way, if people like it, they can come find me and see more of my work!

★ I would love to be able to collaborate with everyone, but I reserve collaborations and art trades to close friends and mutuals. However, if you're a mutual and you would like to do a collab or do an art trade, please reach out! I'd love to hear about what you have in mind!

★ I do! Currently, my tutorials and behind-the-scenes are exclusive to my Ko-Fi which go over my process. However, I do post timelapses of my art up on my YouTube channel if those interest you. You can also join my Discord server for tips and tricks!

The Warrior of Light

Created using procreate

After I finished Endwalker, I wanted to dedicate something to FFXIV. Kadir is my Warrior of Light and we've been on a big grand adventure together.
I wanted to capture one of the most memorable moments for me from Endwalker that involved fighting Zenos in this empty aetherial space.

RETURNING TO YOU: KADIR AND EILTAKR

Created using procreate

This was a little illustration that I made for my partner, featuring my Warrior of Light, Kadir, and my partner's Miqo'te, Eiltakr.

multiverse companion

Created using procreate

As a lifelong Spider-Man fan, I had to jump on the wagon when it came to creating a Spidersona, and of course, it also had an excuse to draw my dog as my multiverse-exploring companion.

BOW BEFORE YOUR KING

Created using procreate

Trolls are my favourite playable race in World of Warcraft. They became a vocal point during the Battle of Azeroth expansion and with it, there was a focus on their Loa pantheon. Rezan was one of the Loa that got focused on and as one of my favourites, I want to honor the Loa of Kings.
I wanted to showcase him as a mighty and fearsome predator, worthy of his title. It would be like you were walking through the jungle and stumbled into his path.

GUIDING LIGHT

Created using procreate

This is a memorial piece, featuring my bear-dragon character and two raven spirits. This was dedicated to lost family members.

SCREECHER

Created using procreate

One of my university briefs was designing a new Marvel symbiote. To counter Venom's large bulky size, I wanted to go for something nimble and lean. I originally leaned into mushroom imagery for something grotesque but this design came out too busy. Inspired by mixing an iguana and my dog together, I landed on a swift nimble apex predator.

MAX, THE SPACE CHAMELEON

Created using procreate

During my BA in Illustration, I had the brief of creating a new member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. The guardians' fighting styles meant that they are focused on front-line fighting, so I wanted to create a sniper. To create a unique silhouette, I designed a creature like Rocket and leaned into a chameleon for the potential of its legs, tail and colour changing.

DYSTOPIAN JUNGLE BOOK: SHERE KHAN

Created using procreate

One of my university briefs was to develop a dystopian spin on the Jungle Book. I worked on designing the futuristic spin on Shere Khan. At first, I looked at developing thumbnails for scenes he would inhabit, before moving on to his concept. I looked at tigers for influence to keep his powerful presence in the machinery.

WILDLIFE WARRIOR

Photographs from a sketching trip to the zoo.

Created using procreate

During my first year of uni, we were tasked with creating an illustration that would showcase who we were. I've always had a love for animals so, inspired by Pokémon trainers, I designed a team of some of my favourite animals.

GRAPHIC NOVEL: CONSERVATION SUPERHERO

Photographs from a sketching trip to the zoo.

Created using procreate

One of my university briefs was designing a cover for a graphic novel. As someone who's always been inspired by superheroes, I leaned into the superhero genre to make a cover of a superhero who could inspire kids to get into animal conservation.
The superhero had the ability to transform into any animal so I leaned into that for a very action-packed cover to draw attention. I tried to work out which animal I wanted to focus on before I landed on a boa constrictor for its potential to wrap around its prey and crush them.
The cover shows the final showdown between the antagonist, Poacher, a metal armored war machine, and the hero shapeshifting into the boa.

THE HUNTER: ILLUSTRATION & CHARACTER DESIGN

Created using procreate

In my first year of university, I did a brief on animation and designed two animal companions. Zubari the Leopard was one of those, who would be friends with the main character. I explored his character before giving him an feature illustration.

TAKE TO THE SKIES

Created using procreate

In my first year of university, I did a brief on animation and designed two animal companions. Kuona was the second character I designed. Another ally character, he is a bonelli eagle and is a free character who loves flying fast.

A BOY AND HIS MOUNTS (A SERIES)

Created using procreate

In 2020, Warcraft content creators, Taliesin and Evitel hosted an art contest, with there to be five winners. In the end, there was six and I was the sixth winner.
In 2020, I drew their son, Aneurin as a little home-made paladin with the couple's mount.
I returned to the prompt the following year for Aneurin's birthday, drawing him on the Caravan Brutosaur mount.
I really enjoyed working on these and giving a little joy for their son's adventures!

ENVIRONMENT SCENES

Created using procreate

During college, I designed some backgrounds for animation. I did three different environments. I found some of them difficult but I'm pleased with the way they came out.

D&D ASSET: BANDOLIER OF RETURNING

Created using procreate

A private commission, for a D&D item. I really enjoyed painting and working out how this prop would work both as a functional item for the character's gameplay but also as a narrative piece, giving information to his backstory.

SEASONAL STITCH CHRISTMAS CARD

Created using procreate

A private commission. For this, the client wanted a Christmas-themed Stitch illustration that would later be used as a seasonal greeting card to their friends and family.
I really enjoyed designing this because Stitch has gotten himself into a very silly mess!
